By: SanDiegoScribe. on 03 Dec 09, 07:28:58
hymnsing: Ray's own explanation of his being "chauffered" around was his witnessing a horrific traffic accident when he was fifteen, a traumatic episode that made him afraid to get behind the wheel and later led him to write the story, "The Crowd." But I also know he's always liked to drink, so perhaps the reason for his not driving is a bit of both. Cheers!

Bradbury may have been closer to the truth than he realizes. And I'd like him to know A.S.A.P. So, folks: Obtain photo of VICTORIA CRATER, MARS. Magnify 300/500%. Look into shadows beneath cliffs at left, not far down ROAD. Look for nearly round "BOULDER". Look Left. See BLACK PIPE w/WHITE Patch leading from round Hole/cliffs? Appears to be connected to 2 FOUNTAINS. Crushed STAIRCASE? Left. Path above. 3rd FOUNT/CISTERN just down rd, plain/day: Hex shape, Dragons base. SEE? Wheels, More! Look!

Monty python is brilliant. Some idiots think that monty python is for idiots... lol. The funny thing is that most people who watched monty python were students going to big universities. lol. And plus everyone on monty python either went to oxford or cambridge, both GREAT universities. Except for Terry Gilliam who went to school some where in the us. And if you really look at monty python, its just so ridiculously creative. Its like a wonderful dream. Its brilliant. I can only see geniuses.

And finally, weigh your own grammatical abilities. It seems to me that you get comma happy when you write and it puts too many unnecessary pauses in the script. Other than the aforementioned, not a bad idea for a website. It's almost like a wikipedia for novelists.

By: XX1goodhalo2playaXX. on 07 Mar 10, 04:55:46
I made an account on your site--PutItOnPaper. You need to consider integrating more to the story editors options. For example, the amount of characters per paragraph is too limited. Consider easing the limit significantly. The last thing you want to do is restrict peoples options and force them to curtail their work. Next, consider adding a note adding feature. As people contribute to the story, they need to be able to easily communicate with future contributors. A side note would be convenient.

By: Xynok111. on 12 Feb 10, 23:01:21
Not how i'd do it really but ok... the scene card idea isn't my cup of tea especially as characters move from place to place, if you shuffle this all about then you get lost. Bios I like though. A lot. A synopsis is done at the end though, it's a summery, not a skeleton. But writing a rough skeleton is a good idea, just a wording issue for me. Writing without any idea of what's coming next is a very bad idea. Mixed feelings about this 'tutorial' to be honest.

By: bryngOneOn. on 13 Jan 10, 15:37:34
heres 2 more ideas that may help, they wont hurt so no harm in hogging comments, Brian Eno when working on a U2 album said when they had laid 12 songs down, he then took the weakest/worst track and worked on it till it was the best, and on and on strengthening the album, you could apply that process to chapters, also if cant get started and this also helps get your intent across clearer is to make comments and replies on utube, it does improve the waffling, clarity, removal of the unneccasary.

i came to this vid as i saw something that wound me up on the internet and was looking for a place where the like minded would rub me shoulders and comment i agree, that site is a load of cac, but this is not the place so i wont tell, i wont, i really wont. another writers block idea, i wonder if you take a famous blockbuster and you just rewrote it sentence by sentence using ur words, of course dif pronouns, i wonder if it would sell, coz if its just about makin money, y not do that?

By: bryngOneOn. on 13 Jan 10, 15:18:23
fuck systems, systems are just a way to salve the ire of writers block, makes you feel your being constructive, getting somewhere. if ur stuck.. write a novel by not writing a novel, by that i mean exercises and experiments, like write 3 different paragraphs about just say a person taking off their coat, 1 version straight descript, another making it feel like peeling a banana, 1 where its a metaphor 4 exposing soul. no rules just experiment and you may chance upon urself in your words.

By: zeroknight55. on 03 Nov 09, 00:07:59
Well, you wouldn't want them to be happy, and stay happy. That's boring. For example, the book is about a family roadtrip around the country. Would you rather read about their excellent sights and rather lenient traffic, or about the struggles that they would encounter: broken down vehicle, not enough money, maybe a homicidal hitchhiker. It's all about conflict->resolution.

@murray1234567891011 That implies that if the first thing you write isn't any good then you shouldn't continue. Nothing could be more damaging to say to a group of budding writers or people of any profession. Shane Black's (Lethal Weapon) first story was called "Super Pooper." Quentin Tarantino's first scripts were all 15 pages that ended up going nowhere and he never finished. Should these men have just decided they couldn't write and stopped?

I guess that's a legitimate criticism, but really, when people are asking him questions about himself, who is he supposed to talk about? I like him and I own all his "Evening with Kevin Smith" DVD's, but something has always frustrated me about him and I figured out what it is. He has a weird way of doing these interviews, where he spends all his time detailing stuff that happened to him and no time describing the actual process of filmmaking. I think he just relies on his talent, which is why his only comments have been "you can write or you can't," which isn't true...and why he's taken so long to develop as a filmmaker.

1.28 : he says "cela dit", and not "c'est--dire"? as it is translated (that is to say), which almost means the contrary. Derrida says : I'm not afraid when I'm writing but I'm afraid when I dream about what I wrote.

I love this disclosure. Reminds me of my attempts when painting. The sort of fear of what i've done, when I awake. I recently found myself telling myself not that what I was doing was necessary or serious nor that it was True, but that the against the authority the Righteousness is somehow an obvious opposite from my dreamless state, like our biological recapitulation, coming out of a dream is like moving beyond my lizard brain into the forebrain of awakened thought. Un-recession in vital.

By: Marenqo. on 03 Feb 10, 01:05:41
I do not think he meant nothing in the sense of emptiness, but rather of collective devaluation of meaning or simply an encouragement towards subjectivation (sic). I believe however that it is more complex then that, since subjectivity is rather a melange of collectively taught instrumentalised objectivity and erratic (yes schizophrenic) subjectivity. The point where Marx and Nietzche meet say. I share your love for Adorno btw.

Seems like everyone who disagrees with Derrida in the comments is getting ranked down. This is sad. Listen. The comment ranking system is not to indicate whether or not you agree with a comment. That's just silly. The ranks are to determine the QUALITY of the comment. Thoughtless babble you agree with should be ranked lower than intelligent, provocative, well-written comments you disagree with completely.

ive no idea what he means by gestures, but for me the fear in writing comes when i have the idea, i know just exactly what i want to say and the angle at which i want to present it, at this point its a thing not any words, an object of thought, (& i'm moaning hes not making sense), but the fear comes when i have to choose the words to portray the mental substance and it dosnt announce itself right away perfectly, thats when i feel the fear, sorry if i make cofussion, if u do it to, u comprendez

By: Aoishi2AL. on 21 Dec 09, 15:18:35
IMO, his philosophy, deconstruction, is just a regurgitation of Platonic Metaphysical Duality, in that something is nothing and that nothing is something. i.e. something=materialism and nothing=idealism. He just took it a little further by taking more elaborate materials that exist because of our current age, and break them back into a more primordial state. And Adorno was alright. He saw the future, not saying that other people didn't see it, but he put it into an easy way to understand.

I think derrida's night guilt is not about "trascending" into new territory or "destabilizing" stablished traditions. I think his guilt was about HOW CAN YOU WRITE SO MUCH BULLSHIT for a lifetime, and pretend to convince others that you have even a slightest idea of what you are saying. HOW CAN YOU BE SO DISHONEST and pretend to believe you have given any original thought

Still gets out and speaks before crowds, signs books, and continues to produce stage plays around his writings. I have an alternate YOUTUBE website with many Bradbury videos. Latest is from the closing of his play last month, of Fahrenheit 451. End of this month, January, 2009, his new play opens, The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit. Check out: RayBradburyChannel on YOUTUBE.

I'm not much of a story writer but do enjoy to read. I had an idea to write a story but couldn't finish it, so I started a webstie called STORYJOIN It allows you to create stories with other members. You start a story and others finish it for you, it's fun to see how the story ends.

By: zippythewildone. on 18 Jul 09, 14:38:51
That's true but Stephen King has been writing A LONG TIME and when you're just starting out, it's better to have a system. I think people should start with this method and as they get more practice they can start trying out different methods. This method is best if you want the story to actually get finished. I have so many stories in my head that I've never finished because I tried doing it the way you say Stephen King does it. I can never figure out the ending.

By: kassemir. on 22 Apr 09, 15:31:08
It's kind of funny, Stephen King writes in a whole other way. He makes up charecters, and a premise, starts writing, and let's the story flow, until it ends. He says that he never knows how his stories are going to end. So I guess there are many different ways of writing, and that you have to find your own way of doing it.

The short story is so undervalued by todays society. We need to go back to the days of the pulp fiction magazines where people can be heard and be appreciated.
By: robhoski. on 11 Jan 10, 16:44:28

hymnsing: Ray's own explanation of his being "chauffered" around was his witnessing a horrific traffic accident when he was fifteen, a traumatic episode that made him afraid to get behind the wheel and later led him to write the story, "The Crowd." But I also know he's always liked to drink, so perhaps the reason for his not driving is a bit of both. Cheers!

The Lake made Robert McCammon cry. It made me cry. It is quite possibly the emotionally powerful short story ever written--at least, considering how brief it was, it packs quite the punch.

I want to say that his literary genius was contingent on his ability to hang pictures, turn on a typewriter and blow up a giant Gozilla, but I'm afraid that I have to give it all up to those white shorts. Thank you, Ray, because scientists can lounge with cheese and beer! Yes they can!!

Look!

i would separate Shakespeare and bradbury from the rest. their writtings are more complete than the rest. i mean , asimov is too sci fi and repetitive, to a point it gets boring. lovecraft is great, but just in his dark genre, for example.
